Matte Painter

Matte Painters are responsible for creating original 2D, 2.5D or 3D photo real environments, elements and textures for matching into live action plates or to stand on their own as DMP plates. This is a cross-discipline role and may require a combination of abilities in modeling, layout, matte/texture painting, lighting, rendering, compositing, LUT and color theory.

A strong understanding and ability to create real world materials, atmospherics and lighting is essential. Matte Painters will work closely with the Art Director and VFX Supervisor. A commitment to teamwork and strong technical ability is essential.

What You Will Do:

  • Create photorealistic matte paintings and elements that match concept and art direction using 2D and 3D tools including camera setup, 3D modeling, camera animation, projection setup, image re-projection.
  • Understand all aspects of matte painting workflow
  • Ingest location data, including photographic and reference information, HDRIs and photogrammetry, to recreate sets and environments with a high level of accuracy.
  • Assist with developing the look of a shot/sequence in collaboration with VFX Supervisor and Art Director.
  • Collaborate closely with production teams to establish schedules and communicate technical requirements.
  • Partner with environment artists and compositors to ensure shots are delivered to the very highest standard.
  • Satisfy client and VFX Supervisor requests to match or improve on planned concept look requirements.
  • Contribute to building a robust photographic reference material library by repurposing elements created for productions.
  • Communicate creative and technical issues in a timely and effective manner.
  • Meet deadlines while maintaining the highest standards.
  • Flag Production and Supervisors regarding matters that may delay or compromise schedules and deadlines.
  • Share techniques, reference materials and ideas with fellow team members.

Must Have:

  • Exhibit reel or portfolio showing strong knowledge of how to combine 2D and 3D elements.
  • Demonstrate technical and artistic abilities in 2D/3D software, including basic modeling, texturing, lighting, 3D projections, paint overs and compositing.
  • Present examples that show eye for perspective, and physics of light and motion.
  • Past experience communicating across disciplines,
  • Experience being detail-oriented and a self-sufficient troubleshooter.

  • An understanding and interest in staying up on, or willingness to learn, new and developing  software.
  • To be comfortable managing your own time and schedule.
  • To be eligible to work in the United States or Canada.
