Look Development TD

Look Development TDs are responsible for working closely with our texture artists, modelers, and lighters to bring together all the parts of a 3D asset in a way that efficiently achieves the director’s creative vision.

What you will do:

  • Combine materials, textures, lighting and models for any given VFX asset to match or establish a desired look for the asset before and throughout the VFX production process.
  • Produce a variety of different material styles (hard-surface, organic, groom, FX-driven) as needed.
  • Create and maintain materials and shading networks, with efficiency and artist usability in mind.
  • Create and maintain lookdev templates.
  • Follow the supervision team and client’s creative vision to create creatures and/or hard surface models that match the tone and style of the larger production.
  • Collaborate with model, texture, groom and lighting technical directors to achieve the desired look of assets.
  • Collect and study the nuances of real world photographic reference when applicable.
  • Innovate and design solutions to achieve objectives to attain desired results.
  • Provide feedback to others by attending dailies on a regular basis.
  • Maintain or exceed a consistent level of productivity while meeting deadlines and producing high quality work.
  • Interpret and implement notes and feedback from the Director.
  • Support the Production team by assisting with time estimates.
  • Collaborate with CG Supervisor in order to manage render times required and final delivery.

Must have:

  • 4+ years’ VFX industry experience, working on assets for feature films.
  • Deep knowledge of real world materials, energy conservation principles, and physically based rendering and shader models.
  • Extensive experience with modern path-traced production render engines.
  • Experience building and maintaining complex shading networks, with a focus on methodical and efficient network design.
  • Experience producing a variety of different material styles (hard-surface, organic, groom, FX-driven).
  • Understanding of rendering efficiency, providing assets to effectively work within the different shot requirements.
  • Understanding of CG pipelines as a whole and experience working collaboratively with other departments.
  • Ability to produce high-end assets under tight deadlines.
  • Experience with Katana/Renderman required
  • Experience with Mari is a plus.
  • Experience with Clarisse is a plus.
  • Experience with Unreal Engine is a plus.
  • Experience with USD is a plus.
  • Coding experience with Python and/or Lua is a plus.
