Lead Fur/Groom Artist

Lead Fur/Groom Artists work closely with the CG Supervisor, modeling, lookdev, rigging, and simulation teams to create photoreal hair, fur, and feather grooms for characters on high-end VFX film, TV and Ride projects.

What you will do:

  • Place guide-hairs/feathers and groom as art-directed
  • Create and manage node-based hair/fur/feather grooms.
  • Paint textures to drive groom aesthetics.
  • Provide technical and aesthetic input to hair/fur/feather simulations.
  • Interpret and implement notes and feedback from the Director.
  • Support the Production team and assist with time for shot estimates.
  • Collaborate with CG Supervisor in order to manage render times required and final delivery.

Must have:

  • 3+ years experience with one or more procedural groom tools .
  • Yeti and/or Houdini experience (preferred)
  • Mari and/or Substance texture painting skills
  • An appreciation of both the aesthetic and technical requirements of fur and hair simulation
  • An emphasis on detail, photorealism and strong workflows.
  • Willingness to take ownership of work and debug issues throughout the pipeline.
  • Linux experience is a plus.

You will need:

  • Experience meeting deadlines while retaining a high quality of work.
  • Ability to break down reference images into logical workflow requirements.
  • Ability to learn quickly and assimilate new information.
  • To work in a team, with strong communication skills and attention to detail, and able to take direction in a fluid, fast-paced production environment.
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States or Canada.
