Digital Matte Painter

Digital Matte Painters are responsible for creating original 2D, 2.5D or 3D photo real environments, elements and textures for matching into live action plates or to stand on their own as DMP plates. This is a cross-discipline role and may require a combination of abilities in modeling, layout, matte/texture painting, lighting, rendering, compositing, LUT and color theory.

A strong understanding and ability to create real world materials, atmospherics and lighting is essential. Matte Painters will work closely with the Art Director and VFX Supervisor. A commitment to teamwork and strong technical ability is essential.

Responsibilities:

DMP Artists will be expected to carry out the following tasks:

  • Create photorealistic matte paintings and elements that match concept and art direction using 2D and 3D tools including camera setup, 3D modeling, camera animation, projection setup, image re-projection.
  • Understand all aspects of matte painting workflow and has a strong knowledge of how to combine 2D and 3D elements.
  • Experience working with location data; including photographic and reference data, HDRIs and photogrammetry.
  • Assist with and develop the look of a shot/sequence in collaboration with VFX Supervisor and Art Director.
  • Work closely with production team to establish schedules and communicate technical requirements.
  • Work in partnership with environment artists and compositors to ensure shots are delivered to the very highest standard.
  • Work closely with the VFX Supervisor and Art Director to ensure that DMP plates meet planned concept look requirements.
  • Seek out and build photographic reference material library.
  • Communicate creative and technical issues in a timely and effective manner.
  • Stay on schedule and meet all deadlines while maintaining the highest standards.
  • Communicate regularly with Production and Supervisors regarding schedules and deadlines.
  • Share techniques, reference materials and ideas with the team.
  • Stay up to date on new tools, software, procedures and other related technology.

Qualifications:

  • Extensive knowledge of Matte Painting techniques.
  • Proven technical and artistic ability in multiple 2D/3D techniques, including basic modeling, texturing, lighting, 3D projections, paint overs and compositing.
  • Strong knowledge and ability in perspective, photography, and physics of light and motion.
  • Direct experience with CG workflows and techniques.
  • Ability to communicate cross-discipline and provide innovative solutions to pipeline issues.
  • Detail oriented and strong self-sufficient trouble shooter.
  • Good knowledge of the entire visual effects process, from shooting to modeling and texturing, animation, rendering and compositing
  • High level of problem solving and creative thinking skills.
  • Ability to quickly learn and leverage new software.
  • Time management and organizational skills.
  • Strong teamwork and interdisciplinary thinking.
